There are many things you will need to do before you leave home. Use this checklist to make sure that you don't forget anything.
You will need the following documents on your journey from the US to the UK (so don't pack them in your luggage!):
ü US Citizens staying in the UK for six months or longer will need to have an Entry Clearance before their arrival in the UK. We suggest that you take care of your Entry Clearance at least two to three weeks before traveling. An online application form is available at www.britainusa.com/visas/ny.asp. See the section on UK Entry Clearance for more detailed information.
ü Letter of unconditional acceptance from your place of study
ü Documentary evidence that you have enough money to pay your fees and support yourself while studying (e.g. recent bank statements, proof of scholarship, letter of financial support from family member)
ü Round-trip airline ticket
ü Address and telephone number of your final destination
ü Insurance documents
ü A valid passport that will not expire during your stay in the UK
Additionally be sure to:
Arrange for the transfer of money to the UK.
Complete and return all forms required by your college or university - especially accommodation forms.
Arrange temporary accommodation if necessary.
Buy airline tickets and travel insurance.
Check your baggage allowance if you think you may exceed the limit. Call the airline you will be using if you are unsure of the limit requirements.
Find out whether you will be covered by the National Health Service while you are in UK, and if not; take out a medical insurance policy.
Obtain a letter of explanation from your doctor and an ample supply of the medication if you are currently using medication of any kind.
Purchase a student identification card (ISIC card).
Obtain at least three passport-sized photographs of yourself.
Make sure you know exactly when and where you are supposed to arrive at your place of study.
Ask your college or university to provide you with the telephone number of someone you can contact in case you have any problems on your journey.
Label all your luggage with your name and address in the UK.
Make a list of what you have packed in each item of your main luggage in case you need to make an insurance claim.
