So you've finished a term at your respective institution and you have four or five weeks all to yourself (well, you have to study a little). And here you are, just a few short hours from the whole continent of Europe! What to do, what to do?

Well, if you are like many American students who go to the UK to study, you will want to take advantage of your proximity to "the continent" as the British tend to call it. But how to go about it? By plane, train, coach, car, bike, Channel Tunnel (Chunnel)? And what's that whole Eurail thing you've heard about?

Or perhaps you want to explore the UK a little more. With thousands of years of history, you know there's loads to see and do just in this region! In this section we will highlight some of your options for traveling around Europe and the UK and some resources for tourist information, accommodation, and discounts.

International Student Identity Card (ISIC)

There are a number of special privileges and discounts available to students throughout the world, including such things as reduced or free admission to museums, theatres, concerts, and cultural as well as historical sites. To qualify for them you have to be able to affirm your student status. The ISIC does this, wherever you go. You can purchase an ISIC when in the UK or in the US through the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE). It is the most widely recognized form of proof of your student status. Other ISIC benefits include low airfares, and discounts on travel. In the event of serious injury or death, it also provides emergency evacuation and the repatriation of remains-coverage which may supplement what is covered by your college or other private health care plans. Purchase of this card is highly recommended. Cost in the US is $25 ($22 + $3 S&H), an amount you are likely to earn back in savings, perhaps many times over. The ISIC is valid for one January-to-January calendar year, and can be purchased in advance. Information on benefits and the card itself can be obtained directly from any STA Travel office. You can also visit them on the Web at www.sta.com.
